The holiday season is fast approaching and you know what that means – holiday parties are right around the corner! With holiday parties come holiday guests, some of whom may overstay their welcome. Planning for parties and guests can be tiresome, but it is well worth it to plan ahead. In anticipation of the busy holiday season, here are a few tips to help you prepare for the holiday season.

Prepare in Advance

Although it may seem silly to begin planning a party two or three months ahead, it can be extremely helpful. You can take this time to research themes, playlists, menu options and decorations. You should also start looking at nearby stores and restaurants so you know exactly where to buy decorations, ingredients or platters when the day arrives. Feel free to enlist a few of your most reliable friends and family members to assist you in the party planning process. Divide the responsibilities equally and you’ll have a party planned in no time!

Don’t Run Low on Supplies

When it comes to parties, less is never more. Before the big day, you should make sure that you have enough of everything you need, and maybe even some extras. Extra food, drinks, plates and utensils will all come in handy because you never know if an unexpected guest will arrive at your doorstep the day of.

In addition to ensuring an abundance of party supplies, use the same strategy with overnight supplies. Maybe your aunt and uncle are flying in from Florida and need a place to stay while they’re in town. Perhaps one of your party guests will ask you if they can stay the night. It’s important that you are able to accommodate your guests and make them feel at home. Make sure you have an area for each guest and enough blankets and pillows to go around.

Decorate Accordingly

Use decorations to create a warm and welcoming environment. The door is the first thing your guests will see, so it might be a good idea to swap out the old welcome mat for a new one. You can also hang some kind of accent on the door, depending on what holiday it is. Decorate the inside of your apartment with candles, wreaths, string lights and whatever else you can get your hands on. The decorations will create a fun and festive environment and can allow your guests to feel more at home during their stay.

Pay Attention to Detail

This is especially important when you are setting the table for dinner. Now is a good time to break out the good china and utensils so your guests can eat with the best that you can offer them. Cloth napkins are a great option for holiday meals because you can fold them in decorative and fun ways using napkin rings, which will make them stand out at the table. Make sure you set the table correctly with each placemat containing enough utensils, a glass, a plate and a napkin for each guest. To add the finishing touch, set candles, place cards and centerpieces throughout the table. You will be amazed at how your dining room transforms from a simple table to a statement of elegance and unity.

Don’t Forget the Bathroom

Even though you might feel inclined to spend all of your time focusing on the kitchen and living room area, it is important that you remember another room that guests will visit frequently: the bathroom. Put out new towels, seasonally scented soaps, lotions and maybe even a basket of magazines. Doing so adds to the welcoming environment you have already created in the rest of your home. It will also help guests feel more comfortable.

Designate an Area for Coats

One thing you might not remember until guests begin arriving is where their coats will go. The temperature really starts to drop from November to December – a time when you can expect quite a few holiday guests. If you have a coat closet, be sure to empty it out and make room for your guests’ coats. If you don’t have a coat closet, you can either purchase a coat rack or designate one room as the coat room. Either option will work wonders and prevent guests from losing their belongings.
