Moving into a new apartment, your kitchen may not be everything you have ever dreamed of. You might not get the all-white cabinets and countertops you hoped for, or the island in the center of the room that provides you with ample counter space. Whether or not you are cooking in the kitchen of your dreams, here are some tips on how to enhance your kitchen space and make the most of it.

Create Your Own Storage

If your kitchen is smaller than most, you might constantly ask yourself, “Where on Earth am I going to put this pan?” If all of your cabinet space is packed to its core, the next best thing is to get creative. When you’re not cooking dinner, your oven can serve as an extra cabinet. The interior of an oven is large enough to hold a good amount of your pots and pans. Simply remove them when you need to use the oven. You can also use the space above cabinets store other items, such as pots, pans, plates or cereal.

Another option is to utilize the inside of the cabinet door as storage space. The trick is simple: Stick a Command strip to the inside of the door and hang a small basket on it. This is a great way to store smaller items, such as cleaning supplies, when you’ve completely run out of space.

Hang Items

A great way to save space is to hang items instead of placing them in cabinets. This works great for items like pots, pans, knives and mittens. Pots and pans can hang on walls above or behind the stove, making it easy to grab while you are cooking. Hanging mittens on the wall makes them easily accessible for when you need to pull a hot meal from the oven. As for knives, hang a metallic strip along the wall or backsplash and the knives will easily stick on. This saves counter space since you won’t need to use a knife block. Not only is it convenient to have these items so easily accessible, but it will also add make your kitchen stand out from others.

Don’t Place the Table in the Kitchen

If your kitchen is too small to store all of your cooking supplies, it is probably too small to fit something as large as a dining table. To solve this problem, place your dining table somewhere other than the kitchen. It should still be near the kitchen to make it easy to serve dinner. Instead, you should put the table in between the living room and the kitchen. After configuring couches and other furniture, you might have enough space to fit a small dining set.

Turn your Fridge into a Spice Rack

This DIY project comes in handy when it comes to saving cabinet space. If you don’t want a large spice rack taking up valuable space in your cabinets, purchase medium sized plastic organizers and stick magnets on the back. Use as many as you need to hold all of your spices. Decorate them as you please and then place these mini spice racks on the side of your fridge. They will save space in your cabinets, spice up your kitchen décor, and provide easy access to your collection of spices.

Take Advantage of Rugs

If you absolutely detest the laminate floors of your apartment’s kitchen, there’s no reason you should have to live with it. After all, you will probably spend a lot of time in the kitchen and you don’t want to be reminded of the floor pattern you dislike. As a renter, chances are you won’t be able to completely remodel your kitchen. A quick solution is to purchase a rug that can distract you from what the floor actually looks like. Adding a rug can work wonders in livening up the kitchen space.

Stock Up On Décor

Similar to how rugs can transform your kitchen’s floor, you can also use paintings, chalkboards and corkboards to make the walls stand out. Placing some of your favorite works of art on the wall can help you to personalize the space and really make it your own. Adding a little décor to your kitchen here and there will help you personalize a space you might otherwise be unable to change due to your rental agreement.
